The aim of this Business Ethics course is to learn how to identify and respond effectively to the moral challenges and opportunities of leadership in a complex and constantly moving environment of competing moral claims.
It was asked to students that we have to establish factual predicates and resolve an ethical dilemma using the process of ethical discernment and stakeholder inclusiveness. It was also asked to students to explain and show their own and personal point of view only by using a base of factual and precise predicates.
Then from the article "France deports Gypsies to Romania" by Associated Press, appeared in the newspaper Worcester Massachusetts Telegram on August 19, 2010, we will set up in this first the ethical issues that has led this specific event with Gypsies people in France and around Europe. In the second part, we will talk about the factual predicates about illegal immigration in Europe. In the last part, we will see more specifically my own point of view by using the common values tool of Pinter.
[...] This phenomenon is also conjectural and had been accentuated by the current period of economic crisis while public opinion has been more chilled, centered on itself and not really open-minded.[2] Furthermore, the focus on the issue of Gypsies immigration is not typically a French problem because the thing is that was also the same case in Italy last year. Nevertheless, the main difference is that in France, French government and especially the French President, Nicolas Sarkozy, has noticed that this new feeling of uncertainty and insecurity could be a good opportunity to reassure his electors. Indeed, Gypsies problem did not become only a socio cultural issue but rather a real political opportunity for the conservative French government. [...]
[...] Moreover, French government to keep the heart of its electorate has been really loyal to them by evicting Gypsies people from France even if this action was illegal concerning the European laws and Human Rights about the anti-discrimination. Truth is not the priority at this moment: it is more important to do not worry their future voters and therefore insuring them a short term protection. - Harm not: French government has preferred to privileged the public opinion against the right and the European and French laws by using at their own and personal benefits the right laws for their cause. [...] - Authority / Order: Here the authority is the European Union and the European Commission that wants to guarantee the values of European people even if at this period the behavior of each nation is different from the European Union view. - Purity: After this specific event of troubles caused by Gypsies people, French government has taken it to bounce on it and profit of it. The purity is broken. - Fairness: The eviction of Gypsies people is not fair because since 2007 they are Romanians people and belong to the European Union members. Therefore, they are Romanian and also Europeans citizens not foreigners from outside of Europe. [...]
[...] But a third actor is then coming into play: the European Commission. Thus, Romania has become a state member of European Union in 2007 and therefore joined the European area of free move of people inside the European Union. So, France did not respect one of the most important treaty and principle of European Union by expulsing European citizens out of its territory. This particular situation has revealed a serious mismatch between on the one side the current practices adopted by the French government and on the other side the values advocated by the French Republic as the freedom, equality, fraternity, solidarity, be helpful, and above the all ensuring the respect of human rights of each one.
