The legalization of euthanasia is a burning issue. The case of Vincent Humbert, in France, who asked to die with dignity spurred a controversy and divided the French society. Thus, two camps were opposed on the subject of euthanasia: those who were in favor of its legalization, and those who were against it. After having reminded us of some figures extracted form a survey concerning the legalization of euthanasia which shows that people (above all the elders) are not in favor of it, opponents of the legalization of euthanasia argued that taking someone's life is a very serious matter, so the legalization of euthanasia should not be voted.

Indeed, they cannot take care of themselves, they are like “vegetables”, treatments are very harsh and they suffer because they lose their autonomy, they have no dignity. Finally, someone who is a hopeless cripple the society costs a lot. So the state could use this money for research, for example. [...] To conclude I would say that a right to live does not exist. However, the notion of the right to live should be extended to include the right to live with dignity. Thus, those who decide that they don't live with dignity (they have no chance of recovering, they cannot eat by themselves, they cannot take a shower by themselves, and they are going to be bedridden all their life ) could be helped to die with the agreement of their family, and doctors. [...] Furthermore, the importance of religion has to be taken into account. For some people, the ill should put up with their pain, like Jesus did until their death. In other words, they have to be courageous. Lastly, we can wonder who would do it since it is a burden and a heavy responsibility to kill someone even if this person is terminally ill. It could have huge consequences (psychologically speaking) on the family or the doctors who would do it. [...]
