First I will critically examine the factors that contribute to the emergence of a European cultural Identity. Then, we will discuss the factors that hamper the promotion of the European unity. Most interestingly, we will observe how decisive and crucial the concept of European citizenship is for the future of Europe, especially in the framework of the enlargement and the prospective adoption of the European constitution.

European identity: a shared Culture Many political players in post-war European developments were a group of people who sought to establish a new, integrated Europe, inhabited not by French, German or British, but by the Europeans.
