We are going to study two countries: Sweden and United Kingdom. Thanks to the website EUROSTATS, we have gathered information and statistics about these two countries and are going to make a comparison between them. The subject we are going to study is the environment impact on daily life. For that, we have several elements to join: electricity coming from renewable energies, electric consumption per household, fuel and "bio fuel" among transportation, greenhouse effect depending on sector, dioxide emissions, and so on. Environmental impact is a big stake of society today. Respect for the environment is a big issue, and governments are trying to make it a subject of general involvement for the population. People are becoming aware of the potential problems in the long term.
[...] Thanks to several statistic tools, we could demonstrate that there are a lot of disparities between them, because Sweden is much more involved in the ecological behavior than United Kingdom. We also could demonstrate, principally for the Standard Deviation that the analysis of the results can be very subjective because high differences between two figures do not mean the same thing depending on the context of the situation. Statistics tell stories, and allow us to prove today that we can analyze the behavior of a whole country thanks to some figures. [...]
[...] Data To lead this study, we will choose several factors which will allow us to analyze the importance of environment in these countries. We will compare Sweden and United Kingdom from the year 1997 to the year 2007. Here are about seven data we chose according to the website EUROSTAT: Electric consumption per household (1000 tep) Mean The mean is the sum of all our figures divided by the number of figures. We decided to make two means: the first one for Sweden and the second one for United Kingdom. [...]
[...] People begin in becoming aware of the potential problems in a long term period. They already take some measures in their daily life such as selecting garbage, using low consumption equipment (wash machines or bulbs for example), or writing on recycled paper. But these measures are taken as an individual commitment; the objective of this report is to focus on the efforts done by an entire country, at a larger point of view. We will focus on the evolution of the policies of Sweden and United Kingdom year after year. [...]
[...] Statistics tell stories by using as statistics and processes as possible, tell the story of 3 or 4 countries (according to Eurostat website) Executive Summary The report consists on utilizing the statistics given on the Eurostat website, in order to tell three or four stories about some countries we have chosen. The objective is to use processes and calculation seen during the seminar Here is a list of the processes we are going to use: Data Mean Median Mode Histograms, bar charts and scatter plots Normal Distribution Standard Distribution Analysis of Variance Cluster Analysis Data Mining Discriminant Analysis Design of Experiments Statistical Control Factor Analysis Quality Assurance Linear Regression Closing We aim at showing that statistics can prove us a lot of thing if we know how to use them.
