In the 80's, a group of cities of Ile de France decided to create an important syndicate because of the huge amount of waste they generated. Nowadays, this syndicate is composed of more than 85 cities, and is at the service of more than 5.3 million inhabitants. Consequently, SYCTOM takes care of the biggest region of France. The syndicate functions on the principle of democracy and the model of a town council. SYCTOM is an administrative publicly-owned establishment which concerns the code of the cities. On the political level, it is directed by a committee of elected officials and on the operational level, it is composed of boards. Moreover, it is important to point out the Eco-Emballages company which has been created to encourage citizens to sort out their own waste.
[...] Municipalities are in charge of collecting these containers and sending them to the Nanterre's sorting center. The waste is then sorted out before being repacked in order to be sent them to recycling companies. [...] They are the last sorting barrier. After having been completely sorted up, the paper and the plastic are brought by 2 conveyors to a bundling machine. Since the plant only has one machine the plastic and paper are packed into bundles one after the other. While one of the two stocks is being put into bundles the other one is stocked. Finally, the bundles of paper and plastic are stocked thanks to a tractor before being put on trucks. Once a week, the sorting center sends the waste by boat to the companies that will recycle it Non recyclable products The non recyclable products are sorted out by the workers during the two manual separations. We didn't know how it worked, as citizens are just the first step of a long recycling process. We have been introducing to the importance of recycling materials and polution progress in our country. Moreover, Mr Cambon explained what were the future perspectives of finidng new way to recycle and protect environnment such as using the metan produced by waste to create energy. [...]
[...] Thus, the S for SORT is well respected in this sorting center. Regarding the quality of their services, we think it meets client's requirements. Their aim is to pack waste in order to sell them to recycling companies. The sorting center is a main actor in the recycling system. Concerning the transport, the Nanterre's sorting center does not use its own trucks. Trucks are being hired or send by clients to the site, however, the employees from the site are in charge of filling the trucks with the bundles. [...]
