Erving Goffman, on 19 November 1982, was one of the most original and prolific social scientists of the last century. A few days later, on December 4, on the pages of 'Le Monde', he wrote an article in memory of Pierre Bourdieu, French sociologist who with his work constituted an important element of sociological thought. Following is the detail of this document expressing the purpose of publishing it which is categorized in two specific reasons. First, in memory of two sociologists who have contributed to the science of sociology in a decisive way to the depth and richness of their approach, and secondly, because the document, despite its brevity, highlights the central point of the work of Goffman that made it so important.

[...] He who the guardians of the positivistic dogmatism had placed in lunatic fringe (lunatic fringe) of sociology, namely between those eccentrics who wanted to replace the rigors of science, the simplicity of the mediation philosophy or literary description, has become a key reference for social scientists but also for psychologists, sociologists and psycho-socio-linguistic (and I think especially of his last book, published in 1981 in Philadelphia, Forms of talks, trans.: Forms of talk). If this passionate observer of reality could look so good is because he knew what to look for. Student of Everett C. Hughes, one of the greatest masters of American sociology, has fed all the achievements of the Chicago School - and especially the contributions of G. H. [...]
[...] It's armed with all this baggage, which must be added the theory of games, which he approaches to what was outside the scope of vision science. Through the more subtle and fleeting elements of social interactions, he has grasped the logic of the work of representation, namely the set of strategies by which social subjects are trying to build their identities, change their social image in a word to occur. Social subjects, in fact, are also actors who trod the stage, and that through a sustained effort more or less staged, are aimed at showing off, to leave the best impression, in other words to be seen and to be assertive . Like a modern Balzac, had imprinted the words of R. E. Park when he said with a brilliant metaphor that sociology had to "dirty pants, ask the street corners to listen and watch people and their behaviors. Goffman's pants were contaminated by social life, without asking the pedestal drive on the heights of idealism or positivism. [...]
[...] Somehow, Goffman was for sociology as the "magic theater" of Paul Klee was for the visual arts. In other words, Bourdieu shows how Goffman and his sociology have begun to study the company closely, pulling down the science of sociology from the chair to lie where it finds its object of study: the social reality of each day. Innovative achievement The work of Erving Goffman is the most complete product of one of the most original and rare practice of sociology: that which is to look closely at length the social reality, in putting the doctor's white coat to penetrate ' psychiatric hospital and position itself well in the midst of this infinity of infinitesimal interactions, whose integration is not that social life.
