Psychology, description, pathologic case
Within the framework of "psychopathology at the workplace", we were asked to write a monograph, that is to say, a detailed study about a person we met and the analysis of his/her psychological structure.
I was a bit apprehensive about writing this paper. Indeed, it is not an easy task to write and express an opinion about someone, especially when we do not really know the person.
In order to write this monograph, I needed to choose a person whom I knew well and whom I used to work with. I chose to study one of my previous coworkers, whose personality seems original and complex to me. His name is Thierry. I met him during one of my six-months-internships in a famous multinational corporation of consumer products in Paris. We used to work in the same Human Resources open plan office.
First of all, I will describe Thierry, his physical aspect, his general appearance and the different contexts in which he evolves. Subsequently, I will try to define his personality structure, backing up my analysis with the courses delivered to the class and the documents studied in "psychopathology at the workplace". Finally, after assessing those analyses, I will try to anticipate Thierry's behavior at the workplace, with his coworkers and in his personal life.
I.Description of the situation: his character and his environment
1.Character
Thierry is in the prime of life: he is 45 years of age. He is tall. He is obviously few kilos overweight due to his non sportsmanship, but he is not what we can call a fat person. He has dull dark brown hair. He wears it a bit too long and it is messy which makes him look a bit sloppy. Moreover, he has little round brown eyes behind his glasses which seem to judge everybody crossing his path and which give him a very harsh expres-sion on his face. Lastly, his drawn look and his wrinkles give him a severe expression, which confirms his frequent bad moods.
He is not what we can call a beautiful man, but he does not do anything to improve himself either. He wears classic clothes, a normal round neck-line pullover over a shirt, dark trousers all year round.
[...] Another example, Thierry is very methodical. I never have to work with him, so I do not know if he has good work methods; however, I never heard anyone complaining about his job. On the other hand, I know for sure that he sets on his way, he has a lot of habits and he is very tidy. As I said earlier, Thierry is as regular as clockwork for lunch and tea time. Moreover, his desk is always very tidy and anyone who tries to move something will be in trouble! [...]
[...] Thierry likes to turn around her desk and tease her. Nevertheless, from one day to another, he decides that she is too noisy and asks her to remain silent in a very nasty manner. He does not have any problems as well to criticize his female colleagues' weight and what they are eating Symptoms of BPD According to Medline Plus website, and such as Thierry, people with BPD symptoms defend themselves against depression. Other symptoms of BPD include[3]: Fear of being abandoned Feelings of emptiness and boredom Frequent displays of inappropriate anger Impulsiveness with money, substance abuse, sexual relationships, binge eating, or shoplifting Repeated crises and acts of self-injury, such as wrist cutting or overdosing Obviously, I do not know Thierry well enough to pretend that all those characteristics represent him. [...]
[...] This exercise could turn out to be very useful in a company. Knowing better our colleagues and employees' personality is a considerable asset and a tool to be more efficient in order to better understand them and work with them. [...]
