The scene is set during the week preceding Christmas. Indeed, Hale is placing the Christmas tree helped by his sons, Reese, Malcolm and Dewy. Hale is wearing a jumper where is printed a snowman and the house is nicely decorating with lightings which really shows the Christmas spirit. Also, Malcolm is putting a sparkly gold star on the top of the tree. However, it seems that the boys are not excited like they should be. The theme of the episode is quickly set up within the first minute.
Meanwhile, Lois is talking on the phone with her older son, Francis, while wrapping Christmas presents. She asks him to stay a couple of days with his grandma but he doesn't want to because he says that his grandma is evil and that she hates him but he still has to visiting her. He has no choice because this is the first Christmas for Hilda, Lois' mother, since her husband's death. It's really kind from Lois because she's thinking about her mother but on the other hand, it's really selfish too because she don't want either to see her in her house for the holidays.
[...] Malcolm concludes with this meaningful sentence: “This really is the best Christmas we've ever had. I don't know why we didn't try this whole thing a long time ago.” This really shows that Christmas spirit always brings people together. I really enjoy this TV show and this episode didn't deceive me at all. It's the kind of TV show that we can watch over and over within getting tired of it and I like that. The theme of Christmas is respected without staying in the same kind of story where everybody is looking for presents, gives the presents, everybody is happy then it is the end. [...]
[...] He finally joins her inside and gives her a musical Christmas card. As expected, Hilda isn't welcoming at all and the sound that comes from the card annoys her. Right after, she can't refrain from making fun of him and tells him that he's going to sleep on the couch. We can see that Hilda is not a regular grandma who is sweet and attentive to her grandson but a person who don't care at all about him. I think it's really original as a role because we're not really used to this kind of grandma. [...]
[...] Back to Malcolm's house, the boys keep doing stupid things as always. This time, they're doing a battle of Christmas ornaments breaking them one by one which is unrealistic in real life because a normal person doesn't do that. They don't mind about the consequences, more, they don't think about it whereas Lois comes back from the supermarket. She discovers her house completely destroy and become crazy. She decides to take back all the present under the Christmas tree and put them in the garage. [...]

[...] Meanwhile, Lois feels really bad and guilty for ruining Christmas. She thinks that she's a terrible mother and a monster. Right after, she receives a voice message from Francis telling her how he is disgusting of the way she treats her own mother, abandoning a poor woman the night of Christmas, and that he hopes that she's ashamed of herself. Indeed he discovered how lonely was his grandma and how bad were her living conditions; she stays at home smoking and drinking alcohol all day long in a quite empty house. [...]
