This is a story about an American family called the Otis. They had four children, the oldest one was called Washington and he was twenty years old, her young sister was Virginia who was fifteen. They also had twin brothers. Their father was Mr Hiram B. He has to move to London because of his work. He should have lived in London, but he didn't want to live in a big city so he looked for a smaller town around London. He found a beautiful house in Canterville so he visited it. The ownership was Lord Canterville and he directly warned Mr Otis about the ghost that was in the house. Mr Otis didn't care at all, he and his family didn't believe in ghosts!
After that, they all had a cup of tea in the living room. The Otis family was surprised when they saw a stain of blood on the floor, near the fireplace. Mr Otis said he had some Pinkerton's Stain Remover from America, and he removed the blood. Mrs Ummey, who was the housekeeper, told him that the stain has been there for three hundred years, the ghost murdered his wife in 1575. The family didn't care, they all went to sleep. Next morning, when they went to the living room, the stain reappeared! They cleaned it a second time, and Mr Otis said he wanted to find the ghost to tell him to stop making this stain, so he looked for him, and, at midnight, the ghost came.
He was making a terrible noise because of the chains he had on his hands and feet. Mr Otis wasn't frightened at all, he gave the ghost a Tammany Rising Sun Oil from America, so he wouldn't make those sounds anymore. The ghost was surprised that he wasn't scared. He went away. He decided to work harder; he really wanted to frighten the family. He went to see the children but they laughed at him and they throw pillows at him, he was very disappointed.
