Travel, Journeys of Self Discovery, exile, initiatory journey, The Life and Strange Surprising Adventures of Rrobinson Crusoe, survivalist expert, Bear Grylls, The life of Pi
This year we have seen various examples of how traveling can change a person's the view of the world and the way one perceives himself. As part of the theme "Travels, Journeys of Self Discovery, Exile", I am hereafter going to analyze the way in which travels can be initiatory journeys, and forever change the person who does them. In doing so, I will reference several documents.
[...] It is a tale of self-discovery and personal growth, as evidenced by the determined look in the eyes of the main character of the poster. All the documents we have seen how a travel can soon turn into a journey within one's soul, and definitely change a person and its outlook on life. One can only wonder if, in a time in which the world grows smaller every day due to ever-cheaper and faster communication and transportation, travel can still be a journey of discovery, or if it is simply a movement from one place to another. [...]
[...] In a second time, we are going to see travel as an adventure through the world and a formative experience. Robinson Crusoe is the oldest of the documents we are going to analyze, and the impact this work had on world literature cannot be underestimated, literally giving birth to a whole new sector, adventure stories, as well as to mass-produced entertainment books. Robinson Crusoe is also revolutionary in the way it approaches travelling as a path to self-awareness through the overcoming of several obstacles, which leads to a higher understanding of one's purpose and role in life and in society. [...] Grylls emphasizes the challenge of being truly lost and alone, and having to fight for what most people would consider normal or even banal: life. His last sentence, "It will be life changing for these people" reflects what the speaker truly thinks about the challenge that is as much a physical as it is a psychological challenge. The last document I selected shows shipwreck survivor Pi and his unlikely companion, a tiger that is stranded on a lifeboat with him. [...]
