The Defence of the Realm act I'm a member of the government and I'm going to tell you in what consisted DORA: The licensing hours were introduced, pubs could only open for 2 hours at lunchtime and 3 hours in the evening. It also became forbidden to: -talk about naval or military matters in public places -spread rumours about military matters -buy binoculars -ring church bells -trespass on railway lines or bridges -light bonfires or fireworks -give bread to horses or chickens These intrusions into everyday life led many to criticise the powers of the Defence of the Realm Act. The control of Industry The DORA allowed the government to take over mines of the country, that was important because the government needed to make sure that enough coal was produced to go into factory to make the weapons. [...] One of the key amendments to DORA allowed the Government to seize factories and land to produce the huge amount of munitions and weapons that were needed to win the war. This led to concentration of workers in urban areas, as well as the need for women to enter the workforce in large numbers. The resulting upheaval proved a catalyst for some of the key social changes in Britain during the 20th century. It's estimated that almost a million arrests happened under DORA. [...]
