[...] The Cité Radieuse (Radiant City) was built between 1947 and 1952 in Marseille by request of the French State to Le Corbusier. The goal was to build social housing in the aftermath of the war, which left France's infrastructures heavily damaged. Le Corbusier designed the huge block of concrete as a functional but highly experimental building. The first remarkable feature about the Radiant City is that it is not just a block of apartments. Instead, Le Corbusier tried to expand the meaning of collective housing by implementing many facilities inside the building. [...]
