Canada is one of the largest countries in the world, yet most of its territory is uninhabited, and there is overall a very low population density across the Canadian territory. Canada is also known to be a vastly multicultural country, with the presence of multiple languages and cultures...

The reconciliation of territorial and environmental claims raises the question of our goal as a nation, as people with shared history. We need to engage discussions and negotiations with the Inuit people, and aim to share and protect the natural resources we have access to, without threating the life of hundreds of people. Because of global warming, the spotlight is on the Inuit and the Arctic region, which gives all of us the opportunity to build a better future. [...]

The aboriginal languages however are endangered, in favor of the dominating French/English system. The main issue for Canada is the "no-man's land" on the US-Canada border, where the Blackfeet nation lives. The stakes of the conference on territorial claims lie in this conflict between Blackfeet and Canadian citizenships. There is also an environmental stake: because of global warming, Arctic's natural resources have become more accessible, and therefore exploitable. [...]
[...] Some tribes have started specific educational programs to keep the aboriginal languages alive, and to save a part of their culture, but people on this land suffer an identity crisis, as they struggle with a Canadian citizenship, which they don't relate to, and a Blackfoot identity. They also fight against the ethnical discrimination that exists when living on the border, as Blackfeet people feel rejected from the Canadian nation. They wish to keep their Blackfoot citizenship, claiming that the land has been theirs for ages. Added to this identity crisis is an environmental crisis, as we discussed earlier, which is extremely dangerous for the future of their community. [...]
