He also defended railroad companies. In 1858, he already spoke about the risk of disunion because of the slavery question. As the candidate of the Republic Party, he was elected President in 1860 with of votes, but only a few weeks later, before his inauguration, seven states seceded from the country and united as the Confederacy in 1861, while some others remained but warned they would not accept soldiers on their territory. The war ended on the 9th of April and Lincoln was assassinated less than a week later by John Wilkes Booth. Slavery was abolished once and for all in the month of December. Today, Lincoln is celebrated by the Mount Rushmore, his memorial on the West end of Washington's Mall and many other towns and streets across the country.
