According to its definition, the truth is a fact that has been verified. This definition seems to be more scientific, mathematical : numbers don't lie, so everyhing that can't be verified with mathematics isn't true. Hopefully, in the daily-life we define the truth by anything that is real and true. The question that arises is how can we distinguish what's true from what's false?
[...] We may like to think that there are circumstances under which telling the truth isn't advisable, because it makes us feel better, less guilty, it soothes our soul. Remember : "honesty is the best policy". People who tell the truth won't get in as much trouble when someone finds out that they lied. People will trust and respect them more. Lying can save a person's feeling, it can save the person from humiliation, from getting hurt, it can save the person who lied from getting hurt, it can make someone happy The truth can do the same but when it doesn't : at least it strenghtens us, and makes us more responsible because we accepted all the consequences. It could be because you want to make a surprise to someone; it could be because someone is ill and another person asking "Is he better?", I would rather answer "Yes he is" even if he's not because I'm giving hope to this person, hope that one day his or her illness will be over (it may mean that hope is more important than truth A lie could also be beautiful because it's intendend to keep a tradition and to help to dream : we're lying to children telling them that presents under the Christmas tree are left by Santa Clause while they were sleeping : it allows the child to think that not everything is so real as it seems.
