Conclusion: The cigarette is a means to show that somebody is independent and the teenagers start smoking to be accepted and have friends. They probably want to seem older. The problem is that teenagers don't see the danger (cancer for example) and they don't understand why they must stop smoking. For them, cigarette means liberty, friends and respect. [...]

So they associate the cigarette to something cool which allows (permettre) to have friends. The black anti-smoking campaigns are very efficient (efficace), that many explain why white teenagers smoke whereas black don't. The campaigns of the black activists have resulted in reducing smoking. The argument used by them to deter black teens from smoking is: “smoking is a white habit” (line 27-28). [...]
