We're in a period, during which there's a great shortage of energy, so it would be very useful if we could find a new energy source anywhere in space. Nowadays space conquest isn't totally theoretical, we have already set up a commercial space conquest : via the International Star Registry it's possible to buy a star. A completely romantic idea, but how unusual it is : as much as the bright idea of the United States to set up a right to pollute (the States could buy the right to pollute to other states, which pollute less). It would be wrong to say that a space conquest will be soon possible. It's generally acknowledged that it's just science-fiction, I consider it as a crazy and in a way as a too optimistic point of view to believe that a space conquest would be our only solution to save humanity.
