Oprah Winfrey, Nelson Mandela, South Africa, Emmeline Pankhurst, individuals make the world, better place
Myths originally aimed at answering question about how important things started and occurred, as the creation of the world and also aimed at teaching moral lessons. A hero is a man endowed with great courage and strength, as Joseph Campbell said "heroes are important because they convey universals truths about one should live ones life and an individual's role in the society". As far as nowadays heroes are concerned, they don't necessarily need to be favoured by the gods, they can be ordinary people, just like you and me. The question I posed is "how can individuals make the world a better place?". I will answer this question with the successful woman Oprah Winfrey, South Africa's first black president Nelson Mandela and Suffragette's leader Emmeline Pankhurst.
[...] Oprah Winfrey was not raised in favourable circumstances, but she succeeded. She now defends causes which are important to her, as the opening of a school for girls in South Africa, which will allow this country to evolve. Nelson Mandela was born in a small village and lived during apartheid, which gave him the determination to fight against it and to obtain freedom for him and for the other citizens. Regarding Emmeline Pankhurst, she fought for the women's right and their equality to men, which she succeeded since women got the right to vote in England in 1919, which encouraged women in other countries to lead the same fight. She was raised to be a good mother and housewife, which didn't keep her from been politically engaged. Thanks to her fight and many other influences, The 1918 representation of the people Act removed property restrictions on men's suffrage and granted the vote to women over the age of 30. [...]
[...] She justifies the tactics that she and the other suffragettes have been using in England and declares their determination to fight to the death, which she meant literally because one of the tactics used by suffragettes in England was going on hunger strikes when in prison, in order to try to gain the right to vote. Ordinary individuals can try to improve things in their scale, whether it is in their association, city or even their country. A society needs heroes, to show the path to others, guide them and give them hope. Of course, everybody is not endowed with courage and determination from the beginning, but step by step, we can try to defend the causes we want. [...]
[...] Oprah Winfrey stated that she founded this school to provide educational and leadership opportunities for academically gifted girls from impoverished backgrounds in South Africa who exhibited leadership qualities for making a difference in the world. Long walk to freedom, Nelson Mandela Nelson Mandela, born in 1918 in South Africa, was South Africa's first black president in 1994. He fought against apartheid, which was a former social system in which black people didn't have the same political and economical rights as white people, and were forced to live separately. His goal was to reach freedom, as the title of his autobiography supposes it. [...]
