"Confucius". This name rings a bell for everybody in the world. It reminds China, of a philosophy, a way of life or even a religion. The Chinese philosopher, better known in China as "Kongfuzi", was born in 551 BC and died in 479 BC. Confucius's life has been the object study of several writers, especially Sima Qian, who wrote the most "realistic" biography during the first century BC. In fact, most writers consider Confucius as a supernatural being, whose life had been punctuated by extraordinary events. His father died when he was a little child. He then learnt the rites, music, writing, history, poetry, and mathematics, and started teaching after his mother's death. He achieved the position of a State employee and Secretary of Justice, a domain in which he showed his good sense. He met leaders of other regions with his disciples, suggesting his ideas, but though those ideas where well appreciated, no leader really implemented them in practice. Confucius then came back to his country at 68 and died at 72. During his life, he gave birth to what is nowadays called "Confucianism", a major system of thinking not only in China, but also in Japan and Vietnam. Though Confucianism became the main ideology in China, it cannot be considered a religion, since Confucius has always been considered a wise man, and not divinity.
[...] Considering the economic aspect, Confucianism is often said as being responsible of China's withdrawal into itself. In the 19 century, when someone came into justice to complain, the judge first put the complainer, the witness and the defendant into jail because they did not respect the harmony and did not try to find a compromise by themselves. This is just an example showing the importance of harmony. In fact, because of the necessary harmony and stability in the society, we can understand that the doctrine is not in favour of the borders' opening. [...]
[...] Of course, Confucianism is first of all a doctrine that teach how to be good and it is a practical education. But according to Confucius, three things build the strength of a State : the army, the confidence of the people to its government, and economy. At the beginning of the 20 century, the analysis of Chen Huang-Chan emphasises some particular aspects of Confucianism. Let's see the role of the sellers. Some analysts think they range at the 4 group of people in the hierarchy, that means the worst place, because they did not produce anything, but only use the production of others to make money. [...]
[...] But can we say that Confucianism will disappear because of globalization ? Is China so easily influenced ? Are the Chinese people going to accept the loss of a part of their identity ? Certainly not. Let's see how in the 3 part. In this part, we will see why Confucianism is not completely forgotten and, above all, should not be. Some intellectuals in China don't want to forget Confucius and think he has an important role to play in the political life. [...]
[...] (if we can say there is one western culture). Here is only my personal impression, maybe some other people would say the contrary. Wandering in the streets, you can see many sellers in their small shops crying louder and louder, speaking some words of English, to attract you and to sell you fake Adidas, fake Nike, fake Louis Vuitton or fake Prada. KFC and Mac Donald's are the new trendy restaurants for Chinese young people. Some hairdressers saloons offer more than just the cut of your hair Homosexual bars are more and more numerous. [...]
