[...] Current organoid systems are mainly suitable for acquiring fundamental knowledge about biological processes and signalling pathways in the epithelium. However, this technology cannot be used to study more complex mechanisms such as the cell cycle or immune system activation. The reason for this limitation of the model is that the organoids cannot be studied in their environment. They represent only one part of the physiological environment of the pancreas. Researchers are trying to recreate the conditions found in the pancreas by surrounding the organoids with connective tissue cells using bio-printing. [...]

To build these organoids, they had to carry out research to cultivate the three main types of pancreas cells from the same precursor cells. After several years of research, they have succeeded in cultivating these organoids, which is a major step forward in the development of treatments for PDAC.
