Les cellules dendritiques (DC) sont responsables de l'initiation et la régulation des réponses immunitaires. Plusieurs sous-populations distinctes de DC ont été identifiées in vivo. Dans le sang, deux sous-populations de DC ont été caractérisées, les DC myéloïdes (MDC) et les DC plasmacytoïdes (PDC). Les DC ont la capacité d'activer les lymphocytes T naïfs et de polariser la réponse T induisant une réponse immune efficace mais aussi de la réguler par le biais de cellules T régulatrices. Ainsi, les anomalies fonctionnelles des DC pourraient jouer un rôle important dans l'échappement tumoral.
