On 24th August 2008, a Bob Marley statue was unveiled in a south-east Serbian town, Banatski Sokolac . It was advertised as the unveiling of the first Bob Marley statue in Europe, and brought in thousands of people, mostly Serbian reggae fans. Although the statue is said to be appalling, this event highlights the potential of Marley's message through time and throughout the world. In any region of the world, devastated by ethnic struggles and massacres, the statement 'Bob Marley, fighter for freedom armed with a guitar' has indeed a special meaning. That is why, through this anecdotal example, we can't help but wonder about the Jamaican legend and his message, which is relevant to Europeans even today.

[...] What's more, the fact that the statue is located in the Banat affects the strength of Bob's true message because this region has also seen the erection of a Rocky Balboa[4] statue the year before, and thus this region is more considered as the Serbian Disneyland than a land promoting freedom. Finally, a journalist covering the event reported that most of the inhabitants of the Serbian village have never heard about the reggae eternal superstar[5]. Bibliography APATOFF, B.
