This presentation deals with the recent French riots that occurred during October and November 2005. These French riots began on October 27 in a Paris suburb and then spread nationwide. We have chosen three articles from the television address of November 8, about the Prime Minister of France, Dominique De Villepin. These three articles have stemmed from the Guardian, the Irish Times, and the Washington Post respectively, the England, Irish and North American national daily papers. To begin, we will briefly describe the content of the three articles, and then, the similarities and the dissimilarities of these articles will be thoroughly analyzed.
[...] It starts in the same way by reporting the French Prime Minister address. She gives a very detailed picture of the events linked with the French riots and particularly the story of the first person who died following the riots. She cites what De Villepin said on the evening news. Lara Marlowe concludes her article by giving a broad outlines of De Villepin's plan. Third article abstract The third article by Molly Moore from the Washington Post is called “France beefs up response to riots”. [...]
[...] The Washington post emphasizes the religion of these young, Muslim. As for the Guardian, these two teenagers simplify are “African origin”. This dissimilarity between the three articles leads to a different interpretation of the French riots. Unlike the Irish Times, the Guardian and the Washington post suppose that the French Prime Minister address on television is unimpressive, in fact after his address the riots have continued. The Washington post makes a hardest analyse of the French riots and the France. [...]
[...] At first, it describes the French riots like most dramatic social uprising since 1968”. Molly Moore depicts the France like a racist country which has the fear of foreigners, which is why the France says no at the European Union constitution and objects to the admission of the Turkey, Muslim country, into the EU. Moreover, the Washington Post expresses reservation about the measures of the De Villepin's plan. Conclusion These three articles reported the same event on the same day, but in very different way. In this first part, we can note that the Washington post takes an interest in the religion in the riots. The three journalists give a different picture of the French political climate. The Irish times reports speech of De Villepin who supports Nicolas Sarkozy, whereas the other national daily papers put the tensions between Nicolas Sarkozy and De Villepin forward. [...]
