In 1998, a plan of renovation started in Barcelona with the aim to modernize the “Barrio Chino”, which, in the process, shifted its name to “Raval”. The film director José Luis Guerin, who was born in the Catalan city, released in 2001 a movie which lies between fiction and documentary: En Construcción. Indeed, he filmed the demolition and then reconstruction of a block of apartments in the “Barrio Chino” between 1998 and 2000. In that sense, En Construcción is one testimony of the changes experienced by Barcelona after the Olympic Games onwards, which led to the birth of the modern city. Precisely, the goal of the present reflection is to analyse the themes of marginalization and change in modern Barcelona, by taking as a base the film of José Luis Guerin.

Afterwards, it will be essential to look at the other topics implied by the movie as they represent the mutation of Barcelona. Finally, the essay will focus on the different groups of characters featured in En Construcción, since they symbolize all the themes that José Luis Guerin raises in this sort of documentary. [...]
