The Walt Disney Company was mainly created by Walter Elias Disney but it was also founded by his brother Roy.O. Disney. The Walt Disney Company was born in 1923. Let us look into the various facets behind the creation of this company. Walter Elias Disney was born in Chicago in 1901. When he was a child he developed a love for drawing and as a consequence when he was studying at high school, he developed several cartoons for the school's newspaper called "The Voices". The First World War began when he was 13 and as years passed by, he was obsessed by the idea of winning it. At the age of 17, he worked as an ambulance driver in France. When the War ended, he came back to America where he looked for a job to begin an artistic carrier. He had always wanted to work in films, especially as a film director. He got his first job in the Pesmen-Rubin Art Studio where he created advertisements for newspapers and movie theatres. A little later he was hired by the Kansas City Film Ad Company where he worked on advertisement animations for small cinemas. During his free time, he started creating his own movies that he sold to the Newman theatre company. These movies were short and lasted only for about a minute but were appreciated as they were related to local problems and criticized the local power. In 1922, Walt Disney created a company called "Laugh-O-Grams Incorporation" where he produced short films based upon tales and children stories. They were quite successful but the company collapsed in 1923 because the incomes were not significant enough to cover the costs. After that failure, Walt Disney was invited by his brother Roy and they set up cartoon studio in Hollywood called the Disney Brothers Studio. We delve into the company and its growth through the years in this document.
[...] Afterwards, the company went on being successful with new cartoons (Dumbo in 1941, Cinderella in 1950 ) even if it experienced difficulties because of the Second World War (it temporarily couldn't make profit abroad whereas it was an important part of the wages). After the conflict, in 1949 the company started its activities again and two companies were created: the first one was created in order to manage the goodies. It was and is still composed of Walt Disney Enterprises and Walt Disney Publications. [...]
[...] But there are many more indeed. I've found a graph on the Internet were we can see the evolution of the turnover this last years and I think it's interesting to take look at it. In 2004 the turnover reached about 21 millions of euros and since then the turnover has not stopped growing. The rise seems to have been the strongest in 2006 when it climbed up by one million and a half. This year the increasing is still present at least for the first trimester for the turnover is about 7.5 millions whereas it was 6 millions last year at the same period. [...]
[...] Besides, the 9/11 attacks affected the sector of tourism and as a consequence the incomings of the Disney parks fell down. Moreover, the company had to face off a new competitor wich had been created a few years before: the Dreamworks studio. It had made some successful films as The Prince of Egypt or The Road to El Edorado. The Warner Bros and Twentieth Century Fox had already been direct competitors of Disney but here the competition got harder and the Disney Company felt the need to diversify its creations. [...]
[...] That is why telling you about the Disney Park is a good means to reflect the activity of Disney. Strenghts The Disney Company has a strong corporate culture especially DisneyLand Paris with values such as the whole quality of the service, the imagination, the dream but also courtesy and punctuality of the staff. In my mind this is strength for it improves the communication inside the company and the staff must feel integrated in it. Moreover ,in 2006 the Disney movies made the third audience in cinemas in the United States, which shows the success of the productions. [...]
[...] Besides a Disney store opened on the Champs-Elysées. All these events show us how the Disney company developed in the first part of the 90s. However, in the second part of that period the company was marked by a recession mainly due to the economical problems of Euro Disney and the heavy investments made by the firm. The French Disney Park wasn't as successful as hoped. It was 25% less frequented than expected, the goodies weren't sold because of their expensive prices and the hotels were not full enough to make a good profit. [...]
