[...] To put it in a nutshell, the relationship between China and the US is quite ambiguous, between partnership and rejection. It shaped American political and economic History in: Boosting its economy through trade: to that extent Sino-American partnership is a success. Highlighting American weaknesses as far as diplomacy and foreign policy are concerned, especially dealing with territorial integrity issues: to that extent Sino-American relationship fails to be a decisive counterpower against Europe or Japan. Highlighting American unclear perception of Chinese immigration: to that extent, Sino-American relationship in the US strengthen isolationist and nationalist issues. [...]
[...] However, it is once again seen as a failure for the American foreign policy, especially after the massive invasion of the eastern part of China by the Japanese, as part of the Sino-Japanese war of 1937. Thus, the relationship between China and the US has a territorial component which is, especially between the late XIXth century and the mid-XXth century, a prove of American failure across the Pacific Ocean: the American exceptionalism may be question here. The period of the 1920' and the 1930', with failures in Asia and an economic crash in Wall Street, pushes the US political History towards isolationism, even though it takes part in World War until it really gets back on the global stage in 1941. At the end of the XVIIIth century, the newly born and independent USA is an overly fragile Nation in need to prove its worth, especially in front of the old European Nations as Great-Britain. Trade with China is a way to impose itself on the global stage, by following the European tendency in and with Asia and affirming its foreign policy as well as boosting its economy. [...]
