One of the most significant changes in river transportation, the oldest means of transport, could be the Rhine-Rhône ship canal. The completion of the construction is planned for 2010. Near this area, an important waterway which is the Saône-Moselle one is planned. This project liaises with the Seine-North ship canal connecting Paris to Antwerp and it's is in competition with the Rhine-Saône ship canal. Both aim at connecting the North Sea to the Mediterranean Sea.
Is the creation of a multimodal hub in Moselle a solution for a limited area or a region?

This project liaises with the Seine-North ship canal connecting Paris to Antwerp (see the appended document below) and it's is in competition with the Rhine-Saône ship canal. Both aim at connecting the North Sea to the Mediterranean Sea. Is the creation of a multimodal hub in Moselle a solution for a limited area or a region? First of all, the aim of this alternative is to reduce road traffic in these regions. [...]
[...] Such a project will be a solution for the main ports. In fact, mother vessels would be able to deliver goods to these main seaports called transhipment ports first, when the goods are coming from another country or continent. Then, those goods would be transhipped and dispatched to small seaports by some feeder vessels plying short distance, as Gioia Tauro, Rotterdam, and Bremen seaports have already done. The aim is to adapt this strategy going through the rivers in order to deliver these goods towards less important areas like in Moselle, Luxemburg, or Saône and Doubs towns by the South. [...]
[...] Then, this waterway will reduce the unemployment rate in the Moselle region. New jobs will be created regarding the construction, the setting up of new companies in the port and around the hub. Thanks to it, the local economy will be improved. This project will have a good impact for people who commute everyday from Moselle to Luxemburg, setting up an everyday shuttle service. This means of transport could be more cost-effective and maybe faster for these people since they will not be stuck in a traffic jam. [...]
[...] Creating this new global waterway network will permit to ship goods from Moselle or Luxemburg toward the South. This waterway will permit to connect Marseilles to Antwerp, Duisburg, Rotterdam and so on. This project will be a major factor of improvement for Marseilles-Fos seaport, since more goods will be shipped from and to Marseilles. These main ports are saturated and they would dispatch some goods toward the Saône-Moselle hub. Using this waterway, some other seaports would be more used like Gioia Tauro and Genova, for instance.
