BBC Strategy,
The aim of this document is to present to the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) a strategic plan for its future operations in the United Kingdom and worldwide. With more than 80 years of experience, the BBC is one of the world's leading broadcasting companies and innovators in the production and transmission of audio-visual programmes across television, radio and online.
The corporation is currently facing challenges from the recent global recession, and new mandates from the British coalition government and a market where technological convergence is becoming increasingly important. Furthermore, the BBC is facing pressure from British consumers regarding the quality of its broadcasting services. The corporation is predominately funded by a compulsory UK licence fee. Its commercial subsidiary, BBC Worldwide, faces strong competition from vast multinational broadcasters.
Internally, the BBC recently suffered a substantial increase in its pension deficit. Externally, global internet access and consumption of broadcasting services are both growing rapidly. An external analysis was used to create three possible future scenarios, from which eight potential strategies were generated, analyzed and evaluated. The report recommends a dual strategy that covers the short, medium and long term operations of the BBC: Streamlining the BBC in order to achieve cost savings and global expansion of the BBC iPlayer to create new international revenue streams. Together, this dual strategy will work to reduce the pension deficit and enhance BBC's competitive advantage.
