The business problem that we are going to discuss concerns the differences in treatment regarding gender. Actually, in the work environment, women and men are considered, paid and hired differently. This has always been the case and even if we can see improvements, there are still big gaps in salaries, employments and positions. But the main and more important gap existing is to be found in the mentality of people. People, and moreover men still can't understand that a woman can be as effective and efficient as a man. These mentalities come from the fact that women have always been considered as the ‘second sex' and not able enough to work. They were supposed to grow up their children, be good housewives and serve their husbands who were the only ones to work for the household. But during the Second World War, women were obliged to work to build weapons, as men had gone to war. This is the age when women entered the work market, because at the end of the war, they kept their place there, and kept working, even if at this period, it was not frequent. Step by step, they finally took an important place in the work environment which brings men to get worried and to discriminate them. 50 years later, mentalities have evaluated but even there have been important evolutions, the purpose of this paper is to analyze the actual gap that there is between men and women at work, considering the changes and the evolution of the last 50 years. There is now a notion of parity that that has been created to set up some rules and quotas for women to be respected by companies, governments, and so on. But, even with these regulations, the situation for women is not all that better. We will try to understand why there is still such important gender discrimination, how it is observable and how women feel about being considered as a minority.
[...] But people are changing, and women are becoming more and more ambitious and aggressive too. They are studying more, to get better salaries and higher positions that are supposed to be reserved for men. Moreover, their situation is helped by governments and regulations, which are trying to make genders more equal, because equality of gender is considerate as one of the bases in development. Even if those regulations and those aspirations are kind of utopic, and keep being symbols instead of actions, we can see that steps have been made: women can be presidents, they are more represented in politics and the work environment. [...] According to him, this difference in salaries comes more from the career choices of women than from discrimination, even if he recognizes that discrimination does exist. He says that women prefer their quality of life than their quality of salary. According to me, this sounds right, but some women who don't have any time for them because they are working hard and a lot are not paid as men, whereas they have the same quality of life as them. So actually, Mr. [...]
[...] She's trying more than promoting the situation of women: she wants to change the mentality of the people. Actually, even if Latin America is reputed for its ‘machos' situation, there have been improvements at several levels, especially in the proportion of women in political participation. In the executive branch, the proportion of women rose from nine to fourteen percent in 10 years, in the Senate, it grew from five to thirteen percent. This is the proof in the improvements that have been made, but even if numbers are positive, when it concerns the representation and governance, which are the closest position from the population, women are still under represented. [...] This kind of a law has also been set up concerning gas emission: the most polluting companies were supposed to pay taxes as malus, or to get money from bonus if they lower their pollution. But they prefer to keep polluting and pay than change their habits. So this kind of law is not going to change anything in the work environment. - http://www.vedura.fr/actualite/5234-parite-homme-femme-loin-respectee- entreprises In France, a study program called Observatory on the societal responsibility of the companies study each year the quality of parity in each company in France. This year, the statement is very negative, even if some efforts have been made. [...]
