This report evaluates and critically determines the origins, aims and significance of different festivals and events around the world and their impacts on local culture and communities, with reference to current issues and trends in international festivals and events. This portfolio first reviews and discusses current issues and trends in international festivals and events management; and then presents three different festivals or events in terms of size and theme: the Nuit Blanche Event in Paris, France, which promotes contemporary art; the Sziget Music Festival in Budapest, Hungary; and the Ramatuelle Festival of scenic and theatrical arts. While presenting these festivals and events, their positive and negative impacts on local communities and cultures are analysed through different themes like risk management, socio-cultural impacts, physical and environmental impacts, economic and tourism impacts, political impacts and psychological impacts, based on the module materials. Afterwards, a comparison between the three different events and festivals is made, with a focus on competition, and some recommendations are made for the future.

Organizers in all three events have paid special attention to the well being of local inhabitants. [...]

Psychological Impact At a psychological level, the impact is undoubtedly positive: the cultural aspects of the event bring a sense of belonging and sharing to the community (Getz 1991 in Fredline, Jago & Derry, M 2003, p.27). [...]
[...] On the contrary, the major negative impact in the loss of local autonomy (Fredline, Jago, L & Derry, M 2003). Indeed, the festival is quite successful and the regional and departmental offices of tourism, which participate as sponsors, are asking for more and more involvement in the management and promotion of the event. The local are not pleased with what they qualified of an intrusion in their local community and village organisation. Psychological Impact The festival of RAMATUELLE has a very positive impact at a psychological level for the host community and also for visitors. [...]
