Corfu, the island of grace and politeness is the northeast island in the Ionian Sea. It lies opposite the coast of Epirus mainland and a narrow strait of 1.5 nautical miles separates it from Albania in the north. Corfu is the capital of the seven Ionian Islands with an area of 592 square kilometers, it is the second largest island of the Ionian Islands, with a beautiful coastline of 217 km. Corfu measure 58 km in length and 27 km at the widest point. It is the biggest of those islands in terms of population with over 110,000 inhabitants.
Corfu is also the greenest island of all Greece. The impressive vegetation of the island consists mainly in olive and cypress trees, (about 4 million olive trees) which were planted in the Venetian period 13th - 18th century. It explains the surprise of one upon arrival here to discover an island with a luxurious vegetation and colorful houses whereas we would be expecting a white and blue island quite arid as Greece.
