In this presentation, we will explain the activities of 'Emergency'. We are interested in it, because we find this kind of an organization is essential and necessary to help needy people all over the world. Emergency is a humanitarian organization founded in Milan, Italy in 1994. Emergency is an independent, neutral and non-political Italian organization, and is especially an ONG/ONLUS (Non Governmental Organization/Non-Profit Organization of Social Interest) which provides free, high quality medical and surgical treatment to the civilian victims of war, landmines, poverty and brings help to victims of natural disasters. Every day, Emergency deals with the disasters caused by war and for this reason it promotes a culture of solidarity, peace and respect for human rights. The work of Emergency around the world has been possible due to the help of thousands of volunteers and supporters. Emergency was founded by Gino Strada, an Italian doctor, with the help of other colleagues. At the beginning of its activities, Emergency promoted a campaign against anti-personnel landmines which brought Italy to ban them. In 1996, Emergency opened it's first hospital in Iraq. In 2001, shortly before the war in Afghanistan, Emergency took a stand against the war and in September 2002, together with other organizations, Emergency launched a huge campaign to prevent Italy from taking part in the war against Iraq.

Since 1999, Emergency decide to act in this country which has been devastated from many wars, by building surgical centers, hospitals first aid posts and health centers and finally maternity center. In 2001 Emergency started a special social program for widows, giving them economic independence within their own communities. In April Emergency set up a workshop for the production of traditional carpets, giving employment to 40 widows, and give professional training until the women are able to run it themselves. [...]
[...] The committee remains in charge for three years. Moreover, the Managing Committee elects a Chairman, a Vice Chairman and a Secretary among its components. The Managing Committee meets at least three times a year, within five months after financial year closing, to approve the final and provisional balance sheet, and the amount of the subscriptions, but it is also called any time it is judged necessary to the good working of the association. The Managing Committee is validly constituted when at least 50% of its components are present and can decide by absolute majority of its components. [...]
[...] Emergency is a particular organization because it thinks about long-term programs by teaching and training local staff; Emergency's long-term goal is to have a sustainable system. Since its foundation until nowadays Emergency provided assistance to almost 3 million people, building hospitals, rehabilitation centers and first aid posts. Where and How Emergency acts Emergency's policy is to realize long-term projects in the various countries it serves. Emergency initially provides all surgical and medical assistance needed in the facilities it builds, staffs and manages, but ultimately its main goal is to become self-sustainable. In particular circumstances Emergency provide support for other pre- existing hospitals. [...]
[...] Actually they are In ordinary session, the Members' meeting decides the nomination of the Managing Committee, the Auditors' Committee, the Board of Arbitrators, the balance sheet and general orientations and dispositions of the association. During the meetings, talks are drafted and then, signed by the Chairman and by the Secretary. To approve a decision, the number of members in the meeting has to reach at least 50% for a first call. On second call there are no limits about the attendance of the members. The meeting validly decides with the majority of the attending members. [...]
[...] Moreover every March, Emergency distributes a report with annual data of its activities. Auction sales: in 2006, Emergency collaborated with “eBay Italy” (www.ebay.it) to sell stuff of famous people (T-shirt of football players ) and gather money to support Emergency's activities (total amount 25 in 2006). Special events: every year Emergency organizes special daily events. In 2006 this association organized in Milan Emergency and in Rome it organized Emergency Night”. The goal was gather people in the same place to give them information, to recruit some volunteers and donators. [...]
