This document presents an environmental audit on Blue Elephant, a self-service high-pressure vehicle with jet washing stations. This center is located in Portsmouth in England. I will try to analyze and evaluate the consequences of running a business such as Blue Elephant. To facilitate easy understanding of the center, after introducing the activity of blue elephant, I will divide my essay into five paragraphs discussing each item of analysis. The PESTLE factors or the Political, Economical, Sociological, Technological, Legal, and Environmental issues that affect the business are also laid down. We also look into the extent to which this kind of business could be successful, and the reasons why such centers do not exist elsewhere. The center is part of a franchised chain of a Swiss concept founded forty years ago. With more than 775 centers in Europe and 511 in France, Blue Elephant is the European leader of high pressure jet washes. The centers are open 24 hours and operate on all days, leaving the customer completely autonomous, by allowing him to choose the duration and the cost of cleaning. The centers are equipped with all the essential equipments for cleaning all types of vehicles (cars, vans, bicycles, motor bikes etc). They include high-pressure jets, cleaning/valeting products and vacuum cleaners.
[...] The customer can put the amount of money he wishes to clean his vehicle and this until he is satisfied with the result. Analyzing the centers in detail, I can see a problem which, although small, deserves to be mentioned: all the machines work with Euros, thus a session lasts one Euro, which should not cause a problem in the establishment of centers in the other European countries, but which would need to be examined for the establishment of a centre in England. [...]
[...] Economical The growing market of vehicles represents an important asset for the development of this kind of business. Registrations of new cars in the European Union increased by over year 2004, and regarding the United Kingdom, the sales increased by (L'automobile résiste). Unfortunately, these kind of vehicle washing centers require only a few employees, (only for logistics, because there is nobody to assist in the centers), would be likely to create job losses, in the stations and garages, where the staff is employed to clean cars. [...]
[...] Generations are changing, and evolving, some of our grandparents did not even have a car, and if they had the chance to have one, it was one for the whole family (and they would probably keep the same one throughout their lives). England being an island, it is not as simple to travel abroad as when you live in France for example (in the centre of Europe). Wherever you want to go, if you want to leave the country it is necessary to take the boat, the plane or the train. [...]
[...] All the water used is filtered and joins the public network of cleansing. How many people can you see everyday washing their car in the street? Not only is it not practical, and dangerous but also we have got to bare in mind that used and polluted water are going in the gutters, whereas the centers blue elephant use biodegradable soaps. To conclude, there are some disadvantages against the opening of jet washing centers in cities like Portsmouth. Nevertheless, we have underlined through this study, that this kind of business would be a different concept which could become essential. [...]
